Being immersed in all the various New Orleans music scenes, GALACTIC are in a unique position to bring them all together. On YA-KA-MAY (to be released Feb 9th, 2010 on Anti-), they have powerfully connected these genres, illuminating how they are all part of one distinct musical continuum.

The album features established legends such as the Rebirth Brass Band, Irma Thomas, Big Chief Bo Dollis, Allen Toussaint, Trombone Shorty and Corey Henry, John Boutté, Josh Cohen and Scully, Glen David Andrews, and Walter "Wolfman" Washington alongside groundbreaking new "Bounce" artists like Cheeky Blakk, Big Freedia, Katey Red, and Sissy Nobby,. The end result is New Orleans like it's meant to be heard, and pure GALACTIC.

The Jim Morey Band performs Gypsy Wind live on CL Sessions

Leilani joins Stephen and Joran in the studio to welcome Jim Morey and his band as they perform two tracks live and talk about their strange brand of Neo-ragtime, NOLA jazz, stumblin’ roots rock.

Yes, they brought in a monkey, and yes, we got it on video.

The Jim Morey Band is a little bit like

Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Tom Waits, Preservation Hall, MMW, and a disgruntled ex-circus monkey are talking about how deep the ocean is over coffee at Starbucks.

Flamenco Encore

|

Last night I saw the Flamenco dancers hanging together on a break outside of Ceviche. They were chatting away when all of the sudden, a beetle strolled into their circle... They all started stomping and waving their arms and screeching... I thought it was an encore! lol Ole!

The biggest peice of the pie

|

After the news came that my dear friend and fellow musician, Bruce Arkin died, I felt as though somehow, I wasn’t living up to my potential. Life has seemed so infinite for so long. I had no real concept of what could happen and will happen to us all. Where was the clock now? Where am I? What the fuck am I doing with this life of mine? What part of me gobbles up  the biggest slice of the pie? Why?

no concept of time, particularly its end
suddenly forced to embrace the reality of THE end through a close friend
If time does bend,
please let it bend for him

No one knows. Anyone who pretends to know what happens after death is a liar and is probably going to ask you for a donation of some kind. Run.
But what is it that I live for?
Let me repeat that.
WHAT IS IT THAT I LIVE FOR?
WHY?
What makes me tick?
What am I here for?
How can I be me beautifully?

Jazz is beautiful.

It is one of the only original American art forms that is built on and executed with soulful creativity and improvisation at the foundation. There is a form or a general direction for each song, but each player has freedom within that structure to play with. Improvisation is the wind that breaths life into the songs of Jazz.

There is something especially magical about being on stage with my band playing our jazz songs and really listening to the sounds that are being made by each other. We play while listening in the same instant, swirling together like a choreographed dance of the soul. Well, it might not be that pretty most of the time, in fact sometimes its more like watching a dust storm at the mercy of the wind, but the idea is the same.

I lose myself in the moment. I crave the times when I, as a human playing an instrument, melt into the vehicle of the song and become an anonymous part of the whole. It's quite cathartic and energizing. The essence of my being overrides my consciousness and starts communicating to my band mates and the listeners about how I really feel. My puffed up ego is humbled. My critical parent is silenced. And the scared little boy finds the confidence to come out from under the bed and play.

I hope that when we play, you the listener can hear and feel what we are really saying. We come prepared to get there, but sometimes the daily grind makes it difficult to find our way. Your interest and positive energy feeds our ability to dig in and get to that place where we find our magic. For that I am grateful.

A Dream I had this morning-
I was hanging with Tom Waits In my tree fort in the yard I grew up in. He was playing my old casio keyboard and I was playing trumpet. Rex Redden was there too on sax. I went inside for a minute to find a song that I had written down in my song book so we could play it. While I was rummaging through my room, I heard him talking to my mom. "it's gonna be magical, Jan..." I could hear him sipping a cup of hot coffee loudly. My room
was such a mess, I couldn't find the book. But I remembered most of the song and when I came out to the living room, he said "Don't worry, you got it man" tapping on his head. "We better go soon to beat the traffic" Somehow I knew we were going to his house to have a concert.
Then I woke up.
